Battle of Detroit
The Battle of Detroit was the name given to the confrontation between Dr. Destroyer and several superheroes in, above, and around the city of Detroit in July of 1992. The main attack on the city of Detroit began on July 23 but attacks by his hired mercenaries and other proxies began on July 19. Destroyer employed hordes of Destroid robots, well-armed soldiers, destructive supervillains (including Grond, Glacier, Ogre, and Morningstar), and the monster Mega-Terak from Monster Island.
Ultimately, the battle leveled skyscrapers and destroyed whole city blocks. The death toll was over 60,000 citizens, including hundreds of police officers and firefighters. Many superheroes lost their lives defending Detroit: Vanguard, Tiger, Goblin, Vigil, Flechette II, and Crusher. By the middle of July 24, almost all of the fires were under control and President George Bush had declared the entire city a disaster area. In the aftermath, the President toured the destruction and gave a now-famous speech while standing amid the rubble that was once Renaissance Center challenging the nation to help rebuild Detroit by the end of the millennium as a shining symbol of American ideals.
